Guilin, China

We arrived in Guilin by air about 11 a.m. We learned so much today with our visit to the Reed Flute Cave, The Normal University and watching the trained ducks go fishing.
The entrance to the Reed Flute Cave.  This cave was discovered in 1958 by some farmers.  The cave is huge and can hold several thousand people.  Hopefully you can see some of the wonderous sites....  It took just about an hour to walk down about 1/2 mile.....amazing.

Look how they put material protection around the plants, hand sew them and wrap the trunk with jute.

Welcome of Reed Flute ...Happy New Year

This is the mountain with the cave.
There are over 3,000 caves in this area.

This is a huge cavern...they said 1,000 people could fit in here.
The Crystal Palace where the dragon lives!

The reflection is from the pool of water....so beautiful

A light show was put on for the spectator...amazing.
It was so dark in the cave we didn't think the pictures would take.

We visited the Normal University in Guilin.  A Normal school is where
teachers are trained.  This plaque was written during the
Tong Dynasty from the 600  - 900 AD.  The University
sits on the land where the Palace was located.
This is on the top of a mountain near the University...
.pagoda  is built on the top

This was rather funny sign that was posted on the path up the mountain.

Former Palace and now the Concert Hall for the
University - needs lots of repairs.

Our dinner setting in Guilin...Chinese dinner but it was pretty tasty

This was an interesting experience this evening.
Comerant ducks sit n this river shiff with a tight ring
around their necks.  We were in a river boat watching
the birds perform.  Many years ago this is how the fisherman
caught their fish.  The birds at trained to dive into the water.

The captain shouts some words and in the ducks go.
Did I mention that it was very cold!

The ducks boat and our boat

Notice that this duck  has a big bird in its mouth and unable
to swallow it because of the ring.  Ducks can eat small fish.

The captain picks the duck up by the neck and
squeezes the fish out of its throat.  Then he takes
the duck by the neck and throws the duck back into the water.
