Jingshan or Coal Hill since coal was once heaped at the foot of the hill, on a clear day, could give a beautiful view of the Forbidden City. In ancient times, it was the highest point in town. Now the skyscrapers have taken over that award. The hill was created using the earth from the moat when it was dug and was situated to enhance the Forbidden City's “fengshui” (beauty).
